A material object field

There will be collections of material objects that participants can bring into the scene. Participants will be asked to move the objects as if they were animated in some way & asked to imagine their experience and affect on the scene. The material field is made of lots of things that you would expect to see in that scene at that time and lots of things you wouldn’t, from queer people and women’s lives and other experiences at the time. Also random objects from everyda…

A messier field

The move something sculpture games I used to set up in the plaster room started with a collection of objects and materials, arranged in a mess. I think it was the messiness of those starting piles that made it work. We could stare into the chaos and something would reach out and get our attention, we could begin to organise the mess into an order, although we may each have different ideas of order. Some thing about the mess provokes interaction, change, movement and ordering.…

An augmented image field

Around the periphery of the scene there is a field of augmented images that participants can see in the same social AR app as the characters avatars. This peripheral field will be made up of parts of images of people, places and things from 90s pop culture and personal archives that weren’t present or wanted in the scene in the park. The field of fragmented images should cover and represent a huge range of different ways of responding to the situation - almost every …

AR to show the gaps

I want to create experiences through which people see thoughts as thoughts and so have vivid sensory and embodied experience of themselves in material social spaces. Picturing the moment people switch focus from augmented thoughts to their own presence, the presence of others and the space between.

Art as a medium for radical self acceptance

Each new moment and situation offers the chance to accept and integrate experiences, sensations and feelings I have previously pushed away and disowned.

The lesson from mahayana zen Buddhism and ghestalt therapy is that i can integrate unfinished business from my past through the radical acceptance of all the felt sensasions brought up by the moment, thr things I push away in the moment, not by thinking.

Artificial Life and decentralised systems

Decentralised systems are systems in which complex behaviours emerges from simple interactions between many agents, such as birds, cells, people driving cars or market traders, over time.

These systems, sometimes also known as Complex or Dynamical Systems, are increasingly being used to explain fluctuations of the stock market, the movement of traffic, natural ecosystems and more recently the workings of the mind.

Being a superorganism

Thoughts build the self as termites build a mound, living around the body like fish, shrimp and octopuses, in and around coral reefs.

This feels key for this method - I want people to be able to roleplay on the scale of the ants. There could be something liberating in dropping our responsibility for our self and playing, thinking, moving and talking as the multitudes of different small but highly specialised thoughts and feelings.

I spend most of my time hiding my thoughts and feelings, without even realising I’m doing it. As I look for other peoples thoughts, they are usually hidden in the spaces between us -between clothes, walls and glass screens. They appear fleetingly.

How deeply but secretly I’ve felt concerned and suspicious eyes on me throughout my life. Inside is fluids, outside is fluids.

Thinking, bodily sensations and rememberings move as fluids and gases inside and outside our bodies.

The space I experience as being inside me is continuous with the space outside me. It sounds obvious but it’s taken 46 years for me to feel it. How much energy do I consume, trying to block the flow of unknown affects from out there to in here and vice versa?

The more I meditate the more I realise I experience the world in a state of fear and defensiveness, seeing everything and everyone as a potential attacker. Attack as a form of defence. Reading situations to snuff out threats before they happen.

Extended thoughts

The Brainbound view of mind, which has dominated western intellectual thought for over 500 years, insists that our thoughts are located inside our skulls. This has been challenged recently by a new framework from cognitive science, and philosophy of mind called the Extended Mind. This emphasises thinking that takes place outside of the brain, using the body to think and offloading information processing onto other people and things in our environment. Invisible Felt Sensations

In buddism, suffering is an unavoidable part of life, but that dosent mean being nailed to the cross. Its the ongoing sense of dissatisfaction that things aren't as we want them to be.
Roshi sometimes talks about the struggle to accept that the world dosent really give a shit about you. The other side to all this focus on suffering is the aim through practice to fully embrace my life as it really is.

One of the ways I try to hide, is to mediate the space between myself and other people. Instead of standing away from someone and being comfortable with the gap between us and their ability to see me as different to them, I try to fill that space by translating from them to me, so I control what is seen and what passes between us.

Species of thoughts

Most thoughts are tiny, roaming around spaces trying to make sense of what is happening immediately around them. They first grew in other spaces, adapting to be highly specialised to sense different things, e.g. what kind of place this is, what the decor is like, what things are in the space and which memories they trigger, people's body language and expressions, keeping track of the conversation etc, to feed information back to the thoughts closer to or in the body, that…

I started this collection of notes in the first few years of my kids being born. For the first few years of each of their lives I had very little studio time, my main artistic practice was writing notes to myself about how I'd like to practice if I had the time. I got into the habit of quickly tapping down ideas on my phone on the loo, on the stairs inbetween fetching teddies/clothes/food or just before falling asleep. As hard as that was, it's really done me a lot of good to just stop for a bit…

Synthetic Psychology

A pamphlet titled ‘Vehicles’ by Italian Cyberneticist valentine braitenberg may offer some direction here. Braitenberg create simple wheeled vehicles, with sensors hooked up to control wheel motors. Different configurations of sensors and motors would result in very different behaviours in response to lights and each other, with some vehicles avoiding stimulus, some charging towards it and others seeming caught between two minds.

That feeling of being watched

Sandi Hughes told me that when someone was getting above themselves and taking up too much space, she would say to them “Get back in your body you!” This is the phenomenon I’m trying to explore, the feeling I get, that we send out parts of ourselves to scan, interpret and manipulate the social space we're in. I can feel myself do it and I can sense the presence of other peoples emotions and wants. Most of them busy, intense and pressing onto me or other people, …

The ground, working with what I have

I don't have access to what thoughts look like. I can only represent thinking with the imagery I do have access to. The feeling I'm trying to describe is of things moving, being pushed and shifted, more how thoughts and feelings, move and interact within and between us, rather than what they look like as objects.

Something about the mismatch between thoughts and feelings I'm least aware of and the material situation I find myself in. The spaces we encounter in our everyday lives are designed to keep us in place and encourage us to play certain roles. Thoughts are confusing to look at

The thoughts that move between us are difficult to see, their markings are confusing to the eye, not as clearly separated, ordered and defined as we might like. Even if we could see them we wouldn’t be able to understand what most of them are trying to communicate. Each adapted to live in or around somewhere in the landscape of human rooms, the corner of a mouth, beside a fruit bowl, around a cot. Each with its own very limited, highly specialised ability to…

This is what connects my practice back to the messyness of people.

What im feeling invisibly moving around situations isn't just thoughts that happen to be moving, but the conflicting forces of my own and other peoples wills, intentions and desires. Thoughts aren’t static representations moving through space, but intentions for things to become that way, moving towards the thing they want to affect.

This project aims to explore new ways of thinking about our minds by describing our thoughts as things that we can see, things that (kind of) have a life of their own.

This idea goes against many of our common sense understandings of what our minds are and how they work. Most of us are used to thinking about our thinking as something that is private, internal and authored only by ourselves. Early psychology settled on a description of mind as a singular and private stream of c…
